Soviet Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #6385

Awarded to Major Fedor Vasilievich Chumachenko (Федор Васильевич Чумаченко)

He proved himself a courageous and brave commander. In combat conditions he was responsible for exposing deserters and other criminal elements, who illegally retreated to the rear area

Oder of the Patriotic War 2nd class. Made of solid silver, gold and enamels. The order weighs 28.1 gram without its screwplate and measures 43.00 mm in width and 44.31 mm in height.

This original order is in worn condition. It is a rare early award on suspension with a stickpin which has been converted to a screwback by the awardee due to new regulations in 1943 on wearing Soviet awards. Original parts of the suspension were used for this purpose including the main part, the screwplate and the full length screw. The enamel on the 7, 12 and 3 o’clock ray of the red star have been replaced by something which looks like lacquer or nail polish. Most details however are perfectly visible and the rest of the red and white enamels are problem free.

A very nice and rare piece of history with historically significant research for an affordable price!

Brief and specific description of the personal feat or merits:

“Major of military justice CHUMACHENKO Fedor Vasilievich has been in the ranks of the active Black sea Navy since the beginning of the Patriotic war. He has been working as a military justice investigator on the Ochakov sector of the Odessa Navy base and on the Tendre combat sector. Later on, he became an aide to the Military Justice Prosecutor of the Novorossijsk and Tuapse Navy bases. Comrade CHUMACHENKO proved himself as a courageous and brave commander, fearless in the struggle against the enemy.

While functioning as an investigator in the Ochakov and Tendre, comrade CHUMACHENKO had close cooperation with the military units. In combat conditions, he quickly and thoroughly investigated the cases and also conducted extensive public information work among the personnel, which assisted the command in strengthening the rock solid military discipline.

Of the 100 cases investigated during 9 month of 1942, 75 cases were investigated in the course of 1-2 days. During the retreat of our forces from Novorossijsk (when he was already the aide to the Military Justice Prosecutor of the Novorossijsk Navy base), comrade CHUMACHENKO led an operative task force, which conducted exceptionally extensive work for exposing deserters and other criminal elements, who illegally retreated to the rear area.

While being the aide to the Military Justice Prosecutor of the Tuapse Navy base, comrade CHUMACHENKO led investigations and actively assisted the military units commands in reducing the crime and eliminating the reasons causing it.”
