Awarded to Major Ivan Vasilievich Monakhov (Иван Васильевич Монахов)
For leading his men in hand-to-hand combat resulting in 2 machine guns and one anti-aircraft gun destroyed, 20 soldiers and officers killed and 16 enemies captured
Made of solid silver and enamels. Measures 45.88 mm in height, 37.04 mm in width and it weighs 26.2 gram without its suspension. The serial number and curved mint mark are located at the 6 o’clock position of its reverse.
This order is in a nice, above average condition for a wartime Red Banner. The higher laying parts like the centre wreath and torch show medium to strong wear but most details are still visible. The enamels show some flaking and dings but are all present and without repairs. A fair amount of the gold plating is still present and the connection ring has not been cut. The order comes with its time period double layer steel suspension and ribbon.
“In difficult conditions, with continuous ice drift, with improvised means, he skillfully organized the crossing of the regiment to the western bank of the Oder River. Accompanying the offensive of our infantry and facilitating the development of a successful offensive of our infantry, Major MONAKHOV, following all the time in the battle formations of the infantry, boldly and decisively pushed the regiment’s subunits, sometimes even ahead of the advancing infantry, achieving success in battle against the enemy.
Pursuing the retreating enemy in the GRÜNBERG-BOBERSBERG area Comrade Monakhov with his regiment overtook our infantry and burst into the KASSAR settlement, organized a group of machine gunners from his regiment, knocking the enemy out of the settlement. In hand-to-hand combat, his group inflicted the following losses on the enemy: destroying 2 machine guns, one anti-aircraft gun, 20 soldiers and officers, capturing 16 people and one staff officer.”
