Order of Glory 2nd class awarded to Sergeant Leonid Pavlovich Shcherbak (Леонид Павлович Щербак)
For risking his life while killing 15(!) Germans with his personal weapon and taking 3 prisoners.
Order of Glory 2nd class; Made of silver and enamels. Measures 47.26 mm in width; 49.28 mm in height and weighs 21.6 gram. The serial number is located on top of its reverse.
This original order is in excellent condition with most gold plating present and an attractive patina on both sides. The red enamel is problem free and only shows some very tiny flakes. Much less than average. The order comes with its time period steel suspension and its connection ring has not been cut.
Scarce award in well above average condition with interesting research!
“During the preparations for breaking through the enemy defenses on the western bank of the Vistula River; comrade Shcherbak put a great deal of effort into locating enemy firepower. He spotted 6 machine-gun positions, 1 mortar battery, 1 105-mm battery, and 2 wooden bunkers.
During the massed artillery strike of January 14, 1945 all these targets were suppressed by our artillery fire, thus ensuring the infantry could successfully push forward.
While advancing in the Mszadla Nowa area, comrade Shcherbak came across an enemy unit. Skillfully leading his squad and engaging in battle, comrade Shcherbak killed as many as 15 Germans with his personal weapon and grenades and took 3 prisoners.
During the capture of the city of Pleszew on January 24, 1945 comrade Shcherbak, who was present among the infantry’s forward units, risked his life under heavy enemy fire and spotted a group of Germans preparing for a counterattack as well as 2 machine-gun positions. Owing to his prompt report and because fire was opened quickly, the enemy group was dispersed, the machine-gun positions were suppressed, and the enemy counterattack was frustrated.”
