Group of Soviet Medals mounted on an old steel suspension

Awarded to Guards Private Ivan Vasilievich Podmogilnij (Иван Васильевич Подмогильный)

 

For killing a German armed with a faustpatrone while liberating POW camp Stalag III-A aka ‘Adolf Hitler Lager’ south of Berlin, killing 2 more in the days after and being wounded in the process

 

 

The group consists of the following items:

 

Medal for Bravery #2275509

Made of solid silver and lacquer. Measures 41.99 mm in height including its eyelet, 37.40 mm in width and weighs 28.8 gram. The medal is in a nice, above average condition with crisp details and light overall wear. Most red lacquer is still present and its connection ring has not been cut.

 

Medal for Bravery #2276467

Made of solid silver and lacquer. Measures 42.53 mm in height including its eyelet, 37.28 mm in width and weighs 27.3 gram. The medal is in equally good good condition which is not suprising considering this medal was awarded excactly two weeks after the previous one. Its also has most red lacquer is still present and an uncut connection ring.

 

Medal for the Victory over Germany

Made of gold plated brass. Measures 36.24 mm in height including its eyelet, 32.27 mm in width and weighs 16.6 gram. Both sides show medium wear and a fair amount of gold plating.

 

Nine Jubilee Medals with their documents

The medals are in excellent or better condition and all but one have their original matching documents. Podmogilnij appears to have lost his older documents not long after the war since the Medals for Bravery, Victory over Berlin and the 30 Years RKKA jubilee medal are not accompanied by their documents while the later medals are.

Decree #24 on 22.05.1945 10 Guards mechanised brigade

During the liberation of a POW camp near Jüterbog and Altes Lager, Guards private PODMOGILNIJ Ivan Vasilievich extracted an enemy armed with a Faustpatrone and killed him. But he himself got wounded in the process. Despite being wounded, he participated in the combat engagements for capturing town Treuenbrietzen for the next 2 days.

 

Short translation of the citation for the Medal for Bravery #2276467 

Decree #29 on 06.06.1945 10 Guards mechanised brigade Citation:

Guards private PODMOGILNIJ was wounded during the capture of town Jüterbog, but since there was no possibility for hospitalisation, he continued his participation in the combat engagements until the town Treuenbrietzen on 21.04.1945. In an engagement on the nigh to 22.04.1945, he killed two Germans. During the forced crossing of the Spree river on 19.04.1945, the chemical defence platoon had the task to activate smoke screens in case of an enemy air attack. Comrade PODMOGILNIJ executed all the assignments precisely and reliably. For courage and bravery, Guards private PODMOGILNIJ deserves a state award – medal “For Bravery”.
