Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:

“He has been serving in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan since July 10, 1983. During this time he has taken part in 4 intelligence application combat operations near the towns of Ishkamysh; Puli Khumri; Fayzabad and Kunduz. On five occasions he was part of a column transporting valuable materials along the Kunduz-Hairatan route. Three times he took part in combat operations to finish off insurgent units near the towns of Talikan; Khan Abad; and Ishkamysh, where he displayed bravery, courage, audacity, and resourcefulness.

On May 26, 1984 for instance, while providing fire support for motorized rifle units near the town of Fayzabad, Sergeant S.M. Yamkovoi led a column of transport vehicles from his battery. While on the move the column was suddenly fired upon by the insurgents, who were equipped with submachine guns and machine guns. As a result, one of the trucks, driven by a young driver, was damaged and was unable to continue forward on its own. Without panicking in the complex situation at hand, Sergeant S.M. Yamkovoi skillfully commanded his section. Fired at by the insurgents, he risked his life, personally took the damaged truck in tow, and led his section out of the engagement area. Owing to his bold and prompt actions, the combat mission was accomplished on schedule. In combat he has shown composure and equanimity. He has proven he possesses excellent knowledge and skills concerning his specialty. He has shown he is a capable operator of the weapon entrusted to him.

Conclusion: For the bravery and fortitude he displayed while performing his duty of providing international assistance to the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, he deserves to be awarded the Medal for Combat Merit.”
