Medal for the Defense of Leningrad variation 1a

‘Short Horizon’

Medal for the Defense of Leningrad: made of gilded brass. Measures 32.01 mm in width; 37.41 mm in height, including the eyelet and it weighs 16.8 gram.

This medal is in excellent condition with all details crisp and most gold plating present. There are a several tiny dings and scratches, but little overall wear. The brass suspension is time period to the medal as is the ribbon. Its connection ring has not been cut.

This is the earliest version of the medal featuring a short line of the horizon on the obverse. The extremely crisp details are typical of the early strike, before the wear took its toll on the quality of the Mint dies.

Absolutely superb for a medal made during the siege!

Awarded to all Soviet military and civilians who participated in the defense of Leningrad between September 1941 and January 1944. The Medal was a World War II campaign medal established on December 22, 1942. It recognized the valor and hard work of the Soviet civilian and military defenders of Leningrad during the 872-day siege of the city by the German armed forces.
